#UmpquaPreps — FWL baseball and softball titles come down to the wire

The Far West baseball season wrapped up on Monday for local teams in the Umpqua Basin.

The Douglas Trojans (22-5, 17-3 FWL) claimed the league title despite splitting a league doubleheader with Glide (11-14, 8-12) on Monday to finish the regular season.

The Wildcats pounced on Douglas for a 5-3 win in the opener and the Trojans responded with a 17-2 win in the nightcap. All five of Glide’s runs in Game 1 were unearned as the Trojans committed six errors. The second game ended early due to the mercy rule.

The South Umpqua Lancers (16-10, 15-5) had a shot at second place in the FWL after winning Game 1 against Cascade Christian 14-4 on Monday, but the Challengers (20-7, 16-4) rallied to take the nightcap 11-2 and held on for a runner-up finish behind Douglas.

South Umpqua finished league play in a tie with Brookings-Harbor for third place.

The Far West League softball season is nearly complete, but the league title is still up for grabs.

Douglas (22-3, 17-1 FWL) swept Glide to remain at the top of the league standings, just ahead of South Umpqua (20-3, 15-1).

The Lancers need to finish the season with two wins against Cascade Christian on Tuesday to earn a share of the Far West League title with the Trojans.

But the Lancers have fallen on some hard times as of late. Fifth-ranked South Umpqua lost a pair of Top 10 nonleague matchups against No. 7 Harrisburg and No. 4 Yamhill-Carlton on Monday. After starting the season with 19 consecutive wins, the Lancers have lost 3 of their last 4 games.

Tuesday’s regular season finale for South Umpqua at third-place Cascade Christian gets underway at 3 p.m. from Medford.
