MEDFORD – The Roseburg boys basketball team rallied back from a first quarter deficit to take a brief lead in the second only to see North Medford pull away in the second half for a 73-42 win on Tuesday night.
North Medford (15-2; 4-1 SWC) jumped out to an eight-point lead in the first quarter behind hot shooting from senior Oscar Banuelos. The guard made two three-pointers and scored eight points in the opening quarter.
Roseburg (10-7; 1-4 SWC) fought back to within five after the first eight minutes and started the second quarter on a 7-1 to briefly pull ahead 16-15 midway through the period. The advantage only last a few seconds of game time and North Medford finished the first the first half on a 15-5 run to lead 30-21 going to the locker room.
In the second half, Roseburg couldn’t keep up with North Medford’s hot shooting and suffocating defense. The Black Tornado outscored the Tribe 43-23 after halftime to run away with their second 31-point victory over Roseburg this season.
Banuelos finished with a game-high 21 points to lead North Medford. Quinton Rumrey added 10 points and was the only other Black Tornado player in double figures. Kaison Faust, the leading scorer in the Southwest Conference, was held to only nine points.
Collin Warmouth scored 18 points to lead Roseburg and was the only player in double digits for the Indians.
Roseburg will have a week off before it hosts Grants Pass on Tuesday to finish the first half of the conference schedule.
