Umpqua soccer wraps regular season, prepares for playoffs
SUTHERLIN — The Umpqua Riverhawks women’s soccer team finished out the regular season with a 1-0 loss against Portland on Wednesday at Sutherlin High School.
Portland (7-3-3, 6-3-3 South Region) got a late first half goal from Tiffany Rodriguez and held on through the second half. Rodriguez scored in the 39th minute against Umpqua goalkeeper Kayden Twichell on an assist from Joselyn De Los Santos.
Twichell finished the game with three saves. Emersyn Gutierrez played one half in net and made two saves for the Riverhawks.
Portland’s Evelyn Hollingsworth and Natalie Oliveira combined to make six saves and shutout Umpqua (10-4-1, 8-3-1).
Despite the loss, the Umpqua women finished second in the South Region and clinched the program’s secone-ever berth in the NWAC playoffs. The Riverhawks now prepare to host Walla Walla in the first round of the NWAC playoffs next Wednesday at Sutherlin High School.
