It wasn’t a favorable result for the Roseburg Indians Friday night, but the team learned a little more about itself as the Tribe navigates the 2025 football season.

No. 3-ranked Summit of Bend rolled past the Indians 42-7 in Roseburg’s home opener at Finlay Field.

“We knew what we were getting when we scheduled them,” Roseburg coach Matt Watson said. “We could have scheduled a myriad of other teams, but that’s the team we picked. That’s the team we wanted. That’s a litmus test.”

Roseburg (1-1) struggled to move the ball offensively and Summit (2-0) took advantage of great field position to build a 20-0 lead by halftime. The Storm started the second half with a defensive score and a safety on the way to a 35-0 lead and a running clock in the third quarter.

“To get a real tough opponent early on, it’s like medicine. It doesn’t taste good, but it’s good for you,” Watson said.

Summit outgained Roseburg 304-145 in total offense. The Indians also turned the ball over twice on fumbles.

Jude Anderson started the scoring for the Storm with a 12-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Summit got a short field after recovering a fumble at Roseburg’s 27-yard-line and nine plays later Dylan Hughes crossed the goal line from a yard out to give the Storm a 13-0 lead.

A turnover on downs for Roseburg and a series of four consecutive punts kept the score close, but Roseburg couldn’t run out the first half clock and left 28 seconds in the second quarter for Summit.

Quarterback Andrew Guthrie connected with Connor Conneely for a 52-yard pass to get the Storm into the red zone. Summit scored two plays later on a fade pass from Guthrie to Kellen Bailey with five seconds before halftime.

Hughes picked up a fumble on Roseburg’s first possession of the second half and returned it 13-yards for a score. An errant snap on a Roseburg punt went out of the end zone for a safety that put Summit ahead 28-0.

Hughes got his third score of the night on Summit’s first offensive drive of the second half, punching it in from 3 yards out.

Guthrie finished the night 9-for-15 through the air for 157 yards and a score. Anderson led the ground attack with 43 yards on eight carries.

Roseburg quarterback Corey Kimball finally started to get some momentum in the passing game in the second half. He connected with McLane Stedman for catches of 23 and 17 yards.

The lone score for Roseburg came in the fourth quarter when Kimball found senior Beau Paschall running up the seam for a 23-yard touchdown reception.

Kimball finished the game 7-for-9 through the air for 101 yards. The Indians had just 44 yards on the ground with two turnovers.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Roseburg, dating back to last season. The Indians have also now started three consecutive seasons with a big win in the season opener, followed by a lopsided loss the next week.

Watson said last year’s Roseburg team took a 30-6 Week 2 loss to Churchill really hard, but this year’s squad reacted differently on Friday night.

“This time around it was more like, let’s get our work boots on,” Watson said. “They felt and knew that they missed an opportunity and now they’re, like, itching to get back after it.”

Up next, Roseburg will head to Eugene to face the Churchill Lancers in the Special District 4 opener on Friday.
