Prep Football: Roseburg takes down Barlow 35-7 in season opener
GRESHAM — Through the air and on the ground. The Roseburg Indians attacked the Barlow Bruins from all sides in a 35-7 nonconference victory to begin the season Friday at Barlow High School.
Senior quarterback Corey Kimball ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns, and also passed for 151 yards and two scores to lead the Tribe to a third consecutive season-opening victory.
“I’m so happy for the way our team played tonight,” Kimball said.
“He knows what I’m looking for,” Roseburg coach Matt Watson said about Kimball’s big night. “He’s making really good reads (in the option offense) and he’s leading this team. ”
Roseburg (1-0) scored on its first three possessions of the game to build a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
Kimball found Eli Rush on a 41-yard catch-and-run in the first quarter to put the Tribe up 7-0. A 7-yard run by Kimball to begin the second period got the Indians back in the endzone and up 14-0.
The Indians dialed up another deep connection after forcing a third-and-out. McLane Stedman got behind the defense and ran under a rainbow ball from Kimball and weaved his way to the endzone for an 81-yard score.
Senior kicker Remy Huerta was 3-for-3 on PATs to begin the night.
Kimball added a second touchdown run to begin the second half and senior Cruz Dirksen ran a 15-yard score across the goal line to give Roseburg a 33-0 advantage. Stedman scored on a 2-point try on a fake PAT to push the score to 35-0, activating a running clock for the remainder of the game.
Barlow (0-1) managed only 141 yards of offense, compared to Roseburg’s 352 yards. The Roseburg defense had two takeaways on a fumble recovery and an interception.
“They knew their assignments,” Watson said about the defense. “They’re watching film on the bus. They’re making adjustments before we even need to tell them to make the adjustments and what we like best about this, not only were they in the right spots, but we had 11 guys flying to the football.”
Conner Perry had the lone score for the Bruins with a 2-yard run up the gut in the fourth quarter.
Kimball was 5-for-10 through the air, connecting with five different receivers. Stedman’s 81 yards led the receiving group.
Eli Smith and Dirksen supported Kimball’s efforts in the run game with 38 and 37 yards, respectively.
Roseburg will host No. 2 Summit at 7 p.m. Friday in a nonconference contest at Finlay Field.
