UCC women’s soccer drops season-opener 1-0 to Whatcom

SALEM — The Umpqua Riverhawks women’s soccer team started the season with a 1-0 loss to Whatcom on Tuesday in an NWAC Friendly at Pioneer Park in Salem.

Annabelle Jackson scored a goal in the 14th minute for the Orcas on an assist by Mara Graf and Whatcom (1-0) held off the Riverhawks the remainder of the game.

Umpqua (0-1) had seven shots, but only managed two shots on goal by Hailey Clay and Katrina Beltran. UCC goalkeeper Emersyn Gutierrez made 10 saves in net.

The Umpqua women will face South Puget Sound in their second game at the NWAC Friendlies in Salem. The game will kick off at 12:15 p.m.
