Legion Baseball: Docs start Papa’s Pizza Tourn. with 6-5 win over Portland Baseball Club

EUGENE — The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s started out play in the Papa’s Pizza Tournament with a 6-5 win over the Portland Baseball Club on Wednesday at Swede Johnson Stadium.

Cal Robbins hit a three-run home run in the first inning to give the Docs a 3-0 lead and Dane St. Clair tacked on a fourth run in the inning with a triple.

Jake Sproul held Portland (12-7) hitless over the first two innings, but PBC scored twice in the third on a two-out double by Brayden Buck and took a 5-4 lead in the fourth on a two-run single by JT Girod.

Sproul finished the game with five runs allowed on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Daniel Withers gave the Docs a 6-5 with a two-out double in the bottom of the fourth against Portland starter Landon Hartman, who allowed six runs on eight hits over four innings with six strikeouts and two walks.

Fletcher Coleman pitched the final two innings for the Docs to close out the victory and earn his second save of the season.

Roseburg continues play in the tournament Thursday with a game against the Spanish Springs Bandits from Sparks, Nevada. The game begins at 5:30 p.m.
