Legion Baseball: Docs leave tying runs on base in losses to Barbers

Burke

HILLSBORO — Seeking its first win of the season, the Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s went down to the wire against the undefeated Portland Barbers but were unable to come out on top in a nonleague doubleheader Saturday at Liberty High School.

The Docs had the game-tying run on base in their final at-bats in both games of the twin bill, but the Barbers managed to hang on for an 8-5 win in the opener and a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

Roseburg (0-3) notched a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1. Paxton Burke led off the frame with a double and scored on a throwing error. Portland (6-0) responded in the bottom half of the first with a pair of runs against Jake Sproul.

Sproul, making his Docs’ debut, allowed seven runs on 11 hits over three innings. He finished with two strikeouts and one walk.

The Barbers came into the matchup averaging 13.75 runs per game. The dangerous Portland lineup tallied 16 hits in the opener, including six doubles and a three-run home run in the third inning that helped the Barbers build an 8-1 advantage after four innings.

Rylee Cheney took over in the fourth and managed to keep the Barbers off the board over the final three innings, giving the Docs a chance at the comeback.

Burke had an RBI single in the fifth and plated another run in the seventh with his second double of the contest. Daniel Withers hit a two-out single to score two more runs and get Roseburg within 8-5.

Danner Wertz drew a walk to load the bases and put the game-tying run at first, but Barbers’ reliever Jacob Bishop got a strikeout to secure the win.

Portland took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in Game 2 on a two-out double by Torsten Horsem, but the Docs evened up the score with a run on a wild pitch in the second.

Dakota Chun hit a solo home run in the third and Max Bishop had a two-run double in the fourth to stretch the Barbers’ lead to 4-1.

Roseburg started its rally with two runs in the fifth on a fielding error and an RBI groundout.

The Docs still trailed by a run in the seventh inning and got the game-tying run to second base, but reliever Logan Nakamura stomped out the comeback with back-to-back strikeouts.

Burke finished the day with four hits between the two games. Withers was 3-for-5 and Fletcher Coleman was 3-for-6.

Dr. Stewart’s will host the Fairfield Expos in its home opener at 6 p.m. Monday at Champion Car Wash Field.
