LONGVIEW, Wash. — The Umpqua Riverhawks baseball team wasted no time as it made its debut in the Northwest Athletic Conference championship tournament against Everett on Thursday at David Story Field at Lower Columbia College.

The Riverhawks scored twice in the top of the first inning on a bases-loaded single by Ryson Wa’alani and never trailed in a 6-2 upset win over the Trojans.

Umpqua (26-23) stayed on the winner’s side of the bracket and will face Tacoma at 4:35 p.m. Friday. The Titans, runners-up in 2024, upset Spokane 4-2 in the first round Thursday.

Wa’alani had the first of three two-run singles in Thursday’s victory for the Riverhawks. Noah Cox drove in a pair in the third inning to give Umpqua a 4-0 lead and Zane Bidwell had a two-out single in the sixth that stretched the advantage to 6-0.

Bidwell was 2-for-4 at the plate. Tristan Schaefer and Jeremiah Robbins both had doubles to help get runners in scoring position for the ‘Hawks.

While the offense built a lead, Logan Robinson shutdown Everett (39-10), pitching seven scoreless frames. The Trojans finally broke through in the eighth inning after Logan Robinson gave up back-to-back singles and hit a batter to load the bases with no outs.

Hunter Robinson took over and worked out of the jam, allowing just one run that went to Logan Robinson’s total.

The Trojans added an unearned run in the ninth inning, but the comeback effort was quickly squashed.

Logan Robinson earned the win, allowing one run on seven hits with four strikeouts, two walks and two hit batters.
