UCC baseball moves into second place with sweep of Lane

A trio of pitchers for the Umpqua Community College baseball team combined to hold the Lane Titans scoreless for all 16 innings of a South Region doubleheader on Thursday at Bill Gray Legion Stadium at Champion Car Wash Field.

Logan Robinson and AJ Victoravich held the Titans scoreless in a 9-0 victory in the opener, while Sam Coffman went the distance for a complete-game 1-0 shutout in the nightcap.

The Riverhawks stretched their season-long win streak to four games with the sweep and moved into second place in the South Region standings.

Umpqua (8-10, 5-3 South Region) took advantage of eight walks and four hit batters by the Lane pitching staff in Game 1. The Titans walked in a pair of runs in a six-run fifth inning and another in the eighth.

Lane (9-7, 5-5) also committed five errors that contributed to Umpqua’s runaway victory.

UCC’s Aiden Metzker was 2-for-4 at the plate, with a pair of RBIs, and Aidan O’Malley had a double for the only extra base hit in the game.

Robinson got his first win of the season allowing one hit over six innings, with four strikeouts and three walks. Victoravich struck out four and scattered four hits over three innings to pick up his first save.

A single run was all that was needed for the Coffman and the Riverhawks in Game 2.

The sophomore from Denver struck out seven over seven innings and pitched around four hits and two walks to preserve the shutout. Coffman earned his team-leading third win of the season.

UCC scored the game-winning run in the third on a two-out bases-loaded walk to Ryland Heckman. The inning should have ended earlier, but a fielding error at third base extended the frame and kept the Riverhawks at the plate.

O’Malley had two of UCC’s three hits in the game.
