Black Tornado blow by Roseburg boys 71-43
MEDFORD — A change of venue didn’t slow down the North Medford boy’s basketball team as the Black Tornado pulled away in the second quarter to beat the Roseburg Indians 71-43 in a Southwest Conference victory Tuesday.
The game was played at Oakdale Middle School in Medford after the roof collapsed on the North Medford High School gym Tuesday morning. The weight of significant snow accumulation is likely the cause of the damage.
The Medford School District says the gym will need to be torn down and rebuilt, according to the Rogue Valley Times.
North Medford (12-7, 5-2 SWC) might have been a little sluggish in the first quarter. The Black Tornado trailed Roseburg early on and only took a lead late in the period, but North went on a 12-0 run to start the second quarter and pull away from the Indians.
Roseburg (6-16, 2-7) was scoreless for the first 2 minutes and 20 seconds of the second quarter until Harrison Scott snapped the draught with three free throws. The Indians were held to just seven points in the period and trailed 34-20 at the break.
The Tribe didn’t let the game get away in the third quarter, but the Black Tornado put the game out of reach by outscoring Roseburg 22-8 in the final 8 minutes.
Roseburg’s Jaron Leeworthy scored 9 of his team-high 16 points in the first half. Owen Bentea made a pair of 3-point shots and added 15 points for the Indians.
Easton Curtis put up 20 points to lead North Medford and Keenan Stewart was also in double figures with 11. The Black Tornado had 10 players record a point in the game.
The Indians return to action at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday at South Medford.
