Docs end Palouse Summer Series with heartbreaking 10-9 loss to Kalispell

PULLMAN, Wash. — The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s ended their time in the Palouse Summer Series with a disappointing 10-9 loss against the Kalispell Lakers Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field on the campus of Washington State University.

Roseburg (6-7-1) carried a 9-5 lead into the seventh inning and needed just three outs to get the win.

Kalispell (26-10) stunned the Docs by scoring five runs in its final at bats on five hits and two walks to steal the victory. The loss eliminated Dr. Stewart’s from contention for Sunday’s semifinals.

The Lakers, from northwest Montana, scored the winning run on a bases-loaded squeeze bunt by Kaden Drish. Earlier in the inning, Trevor Cockerill jumpstarted the comeback with a two-run double.

Brysen Heroin drove in a run with a single and Luke Nikunen tied the game with an infield single.

All five runs in the seventh were scored against Ty Hellenthal, who started the inning in relief of Daniel Withers.

Withers entered the game in the second inning for starter Brevin Harrison. The Umpqua Valley Christian graduate steadied the ship to give the Docs a chance to rally from a 4-3 deficit. Withers finished with a no-decision after throwing 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Roseburg grabbed the lead back in the fifth inning. Dane St. Clair tied the game at 4-all with a triple and Brooks Avery brough St. Clair home to give the Docs a 5-4 advantage.

The Stewies looked to be in control after notching four runs in the sixth inning. Avery added another RBI and Logan Anderson drove in a pair with a two-out single to give the Docs a 9-4 lead.

Avery was 3-for-4 in the contest with two RBI’s. Anderson also had two RBI’s, going 2-for-4. Ty Haynes plated a pair of runs with a double in the second.

It was a strong showing for Avery in the tournament. The shortstop was 7-for-16 at the plate (.438) with five RBI’s, five runs and three stolen bases.

The Docs return home for a couple of days off before resuming Area 4 league play with a doubleheader against the Grants Pass Nuggets starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Champion Car Wash Field.
