Docs settle for tie against Northwest Bandits in Palouse Summer Series

LEWISTON, Idaho — The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s let a large lead slip away against the Northwest Bandits on Day 2 of the Palouse Summer Series and had to settle for an 8-8 tie on Friday at Harris Field at Ed Cheff Stadium.

Roseburg (6-6-1) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Bandits’ starter Nolan Curran. The large lead wasn’t enough as the Bandits chipped away at the lead and pulled ahead 8-7 in the sixth inning.

The Docs got some help in the bottom of the seventh with one out. Tauj Flora launched a ball deep to left field that just continued to carry to the fence. Bandits left fielder Tim Cook was tracking the ball, but couldn’t haul it in for the second out.

The fielding error gave the Docs runners at second and third and Logan Anderson tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Flora stole third to put the game-winning run 90 feet from home, but Gavin Harrington struck out Cole Collins to end the inning and the game, which had reached the tournament’s 2 hour and 10 minute time limit.

The tie gives the Docs a 1-1-1 record in tournament play and reduces their chances of winning their pool and advancing to the semifinals on Sunday.

The Docs were in good shape to start thanks to erratic pitching by Curran. The Bandits’ starter hit a batter and walked five consecutive hitters to give Roseburg a 3-0 lead.

Before the first inning came to a close, Collins drilled a fly ball off the left field fence for a three-run double that put the Docs in front 6-0.

Curran exited the game after just 2/3 of an inning and finished with six runs allowed on two hits, with five walks and one hit batter.

Docs starter Camden Hartsell held off the Bandits until the third inning. The Seattle-based team put up a pair of runs in the third, three in the fourth and grabbed the lead with another three runs in the sixth off of Docs’ reliever Colton Siewell, who was hurt by a pair of fielding errors.

Six players had a hit for the Bandits (8-7-1). Henry Crumbaugh was the most productive, going 1-for-2 with three RBI’s on a double and two sacrifice flies.

Evan Martin was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored to lead the Docs. Anderson drove in a pair. The Docs had four extra base hits.

Roseburg will finish pool play against the Kalispell (MT) Lakers at noon Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field on the campus of Washington State University in Pullman, Wash.
