Docs blank Corvallis 8-0 for third place in Father’s Day Tournament

A day after getting shutout by the Corvallis Gerding Builders Marketmen, the Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s returned the favor with an 8-0 win in the third place game of the Father’s Day Tournament on Sunday at Bill Gray Legion Stadium at Champion Car Wash Field.

Ty Hellenthal and Drew Camp combined to pitch seven scoreless innings, scattering eight hits while striking out five and allowing no walks.

Roseburg (5-5) jumped on Corvallis (5-6) in the top of the first. Brooks Avery scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Evan Martin after reaching on an error to start out the ball game.

Cole Collins brought home three more runs with a two-out triple that put the Docs ahead 4-0.

Martin earned another RBI after reaching again on a fielder’s choice in the second inning.

Daniel Withers capped Roseburg’s scoring with a two-run double in the fifth.

The Marketmen used four pitchers in the matchup, with none of them lasting more than two innings. Pierce Paventy started the game and allowed six runs on two hits to take the loss.

Dr. Stewart’s went 2-2 in the tournament. Corvallis was also 2-2 in tournament play.

Medford defeated Mid-Valley 4-3 on Sunday to earn the Father’s Day Tournament championship. Klamath Falls beat Salem Withnell 12-0 in the fifth place game.

The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s will head to Lewiston, Ida. to begin play in the Palouse Summer Series on Thursday. The Docs will play four guaranteed games over three days.

The Stewies face the hometown Lewis-Clark Twins at 1 p.m. Thursday at Lewis-Clark State College. The Docs will follow that with a game against Reality Sports at 4 p.m.

Roseburg squares off with the Northwest Bandits at 1 p.m. on Friday in Lewiston and wraps up pool play with a game against the Kalispell Lakers at noon on Saturday in Pullman, Wash. at Washington State University.

If the Docs win their pool, they’ll play in a semifinal game on Sunday with a chance to play in the tournament finals.
