ROSEBURG – A three-hit pitching performance from Zack Mandera and a three-RBI double by Jett Black led the Roseburg baseball team to a 5-1 win over Sherwood in the first round of the OSAA state playoffs on Monday at Legion Field.

Mandera tossed a complete game to finish off the Bowmen’s season. He allowed just the one earned run, while walking one and striking out two. The junior improved his season record to 7-2.

The Indians started the scoring in the second inning off of Sherwood starter Riley Aggson. Cody Johnson and Doran Gillespie each reached base with one-out singles and Terrell Jacks got on after getting hit by a pitch. Jett Black cleared the bases with a sharp line drive that landed just inside the left field foul line and rolled all the way to the wall to give Roseburg a 3-0 advantage.

Roseburg (18-7) pushed the lead to 5-0 in the fifth on a one-out single by Brody Black. The senior squeezed a grounder through the infield with runners at second and third.

Sherwood (18-10) got its only run of the game in the sixth. Anthony Garrett drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. He moved to third on a single by Jacob Matzat and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hayden Gilbert. It was only the third time in the game that the Bowmen had a runner reach scoring position.

Mandera finished off the game with a 1-2-3 seventh. He was very efficient over the game throwing just 78 pitches and lowered his season ERA to 2.49.

Jett Black and Jonathan Stone each had doubles for Roseburg. Brody Black went 1-3 with two RBI.

Up next for the Indians is a second round contest against Central Catholic. The Rams advanced after a 3-2 marathon victory against Wilson that ended after 13 innings. The game will be held on Wednesday at Joe Etzel Field on the campus of the University of Portland. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.

Roseburg’s playoff game will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Radio 1490 The Score or watch the game online at 541radio.com. Pregame coverage starts at 4:45 p.m.
