MEDFORD – The Roseburg and North Medford baseball teams had a wild day at Jim McCabee Field on Saturday and finished the Southwest Conference season with both teams winning one-run affairs.
The Black Tornado pulled off a seventh inning comeback to walk off with an 8-7 win in the opener and the Indians seventh inning rally to win 4-3 in game two.
North Medford (13-12; 8-10 SWC) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh in game one to win for the first time this season against Roseburg.
Indians’ starter Zack Mandera was pulled from the game with two outs in the seventh after reaching his pitch limit. He struck out his final batter and the game nearly ended on a double steal, but Terrell Jacks’ throw to third was only a moment too late.
Jett Black took over on the mound with two outs, two men in scoring position, and the Indians leading 7-5. Black walked the first batter to load the bases and then beaned Ryan Klouk to plate one run. Black’s third batter faced was Zack Collins, who hit a grounder up the middle to score the tying and winning runs.
Black faced just three hitters, but took the loss. Mandera didn’t factor into the decision after tossing 6 2/3 innings. He gave up nine hits and seven runs, but struck out nine and walked only two.
Reliever Jon-o Gassman picked up the win for North Medford. He went to the mound in the fourth inning and allowed just one hit over the final four frames. He surrendered just one unearned run and struck out three.
Roseburg (16-7; 12-6 SWC) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two on a sacrifice fly by Terrell Jacks. The lead was short-lived as North Medford tied the game in the second on a groundout by Josh Robbins. The Black Tornado took the lead in the third with two more runs off Roseburg starter Cody Johnson.
Johnson found a groove after giving up the lead. He held North scoreless and allowed just two more hits the rest of the game. The senior allowed only one runner to reach scoring position through the final four innings and recorded six of his seven strikeouts.
While Johnson was dealing on the mound, Roseburg offense plugged away. The Tribe got one run in the fifth after Garrett Russell reached on an error, moved into scoring position on a balk, and then scored on a single by Caden Johnson. Cody Johnson drove in another run in the sixth to tie the game up at 3-3.
Russell led off the seventh inning with a double to get the winning run in scoring position. He advanced to third on a sac bunt by Caden Johnson and then scored on a wild pitch by North starter Ryan Sandoval. Sandoval pitched a complete game, but took the loss.
Johnson preserved the win by striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh.
Roseburg finished the season with a series win against North Medford. The Indians took second in the Southwest Conference standings and ended up 11th in the OSAA power rankings.
Up next, the Indians will host Westview for a playoff tune-up game on Wednesday at Legion Field. The game is currently scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Following that, Roseburg will begin the 6A state playoffs on May 21. The Indians will host a first round playoff game for the first time since 2013.
