EUGENE – Roseburg sophomore Jett Black pitched a complete-game and allowed just one earned run in a spot start and led the Indians to a 6-2 victory over the Willamette Wolverines on Tuesday at Willamette High School.
Black was making his first start of the season and improved to 2-1 on the year. He scattered seven hits throughout the seven inning affair, but limited the damage by striking out three and walking none. The sophomore also managed to strand five Willamette runners in scoring position.
Willamette took a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an unearned run. Joey Barr reached base on an error by Roseburg first baseman Jonathan Stone. Barr later scored on a one-out single by Chandler Woods.
Wolverines starter Tyler Moffatt started strong against Roseburg. He retired the first six Roseburg hitters in order, but the Indians broke through in the third. Doran Gillepsie led off with a double and Garrett Russell drew a two-out walk two batters later. They both came around to score on a Caden Johnson single to give Roseburg a 2-1 lead.
The Tribe extended the lead in the very next at bat. Stone hit his second home run of the season and scored Johnson to put the Indians in front 4-1.
Roseburg (15-6; 11-5 SWC) added another run in the fourth. Gillepie scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on a fielder’s choice.
The Indians scored their final run of the game on a two-out double by Terrell Jacks in the sixth inning.
Willamette (3-17; 2-14 SWC) scored its final run in the sixth as well. Dane Woodcook got into scoring position with a double and scored on a single by pinch-hitter Austin Kovachy. The momentum was short lived as the Wolverines hit into an inning-ending double play in the next at bat.
Jett Black closed out the game with a 1-2-3 seventh inning. His complete game was the longest outing of his varsity career.
The win, combined with South Eugene’s 11-7 loss to Grants Pass, clinched a second place finish for the Roseburg baseball team.
The Indians finish out the conference season with a doubleheader at North Medford on Saturday. The Black Tornado lost 8-1 against South Medford on Tuesday and will be fighting to clinch a playoff spot when they face the Indians this weekend.
