CRESWELL – The Roseburg boy’s golf team is headed to the 6A state tournament for the first time since 2013. The Indians placed second at a regional qualifying tournament on Monday and will compete at the two-day state tournament next week.

Sophomore Bryce Thomason and senior Hunter Endicott each shot an 86 at Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell to lead Roseburg High. The duo fell seven strokes behind the tournament’s individual champion.

Seniors Dylan Guido and Josh Alexander rounded out Roseburg’s top four scores. Guido shot a 92 and Alexander carded a 93.

The Indians netted a team score of 357 and beat third place South Medford by three strokes. Only the top two teams qualify for the state tournament. Sheldon took first in the six-team field with a score of 338.

Roseburg will head back to Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell next week for the state tournament. The first round begins Monday morning.

Roseburg coach Chad Smith said that the Indians will have the advantage of recently playing at Emerald Valley when they tee off on Monday. Even still, he knows it won’t be an easy task.

“It will be a different course. We’ve got to get a whole lot better,” Smith explained. He added that Emerald Valley is one of the toughest courses to play in the state, but that it plays well to Roseburg’s skill set.

The Southwest Conference will be well represented at the state tournament. The conference’s top three teams all qualified for state and four of the top five individual golfers that earned state tournament berths at the regional qualifier were from the SWC.
