ROSEBURG – The Roseburg baseball team rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to comeback for a 4-2 win over North Medford at Legion Field on Wednesday.

Sophomore Jace Stoffal gave up two runs to the Black Tornado in the first inning, but settled in and allowed no runs and just two hits over the next five innings. He earned his fourth win for the Indians and and finished with five strikeouts and only two walks.

North Medford (8-7; 4-5 SWC) jumped on Stoffal in the first inning. Quinton Rumrey led off with a single and moved to third with two stolen bases. A two-out single by Jon-o Gassman plated Rumrey to give the Tornado a 1-0 advantage. Gassman stole second and came home on a double by Brady Buchanan to put North in front 2-0.

Roseburg (11-3; 7-2 SWC) got one run back in the first when Garrett Russell scored on a double by Caden Johnson. Jonathan Stone tied the score in the second inning when he came around on a single by Russell.

The game remained tied until the fourth, when the Indians took their first lead of the game by scoring two runs on no hits and an error. Stone and Terrell Jacks led off the inning by getting walked and beaned, respectively. A sacrifice bunt by Jett Black moved both runners into scoring position.

Russell was intentionally walked to load the bases and the strategy almost worked out. Caden Johnson grounded into what looked to be an inning-ending double play. North Medford got the out at second, but the relay throw to first wasn’t in time and got away from first baseman Trevor Carallo. The throwing error allowed a second run to score and gave the Tribe a 4-2 advantage.

North Medford had a chance to cut into the deficit or tie the game in the fifth. The Black Tornado got two men into scoring position with one out, but Stoffal closed out the inning with a strike out and a pop-out to preserve the lead.

Zack Mandera came out of the bullpen and pitched a perfect seventh inning to pick up his first save of the season.

The win gives Roseburg a three-game lead over third place North Medford and South Eugene. The Indians will travel to Eugene on Saturday to face the Axe in a conference doubleheader. Roseburg previously defeated South Eugene 4-0 in it’s second game of the season.

Saturday’s doubleheader starts at 11 a.m. Tune in for coverage of the game starting at 10:45 a.m. on CBS Sports Radio 1490 The Score or watch online at 541radio.com.
