EUGENE – The Roseburg baseball team bounced back from a tough day on the field Monday with an important 7-4 win over the Sheldon Irish in Eugene on Tuesday.

The Indians jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on five hits. Senior Brody Black drove in the first two runs with a single to left field and Terrell Jacks picked up an RBI after getting beaned with the bases loaded.

Sheldon (6-7; 3-4 SWC) tied the game with three unearned runs off of Roseburg starter Jace Stoffal in the second inning. A fielding error at third helped extend the frame and Sheldon’s Dawson Prickel and Dylan Hansen capitalized with back-to-back hits to drive in the tying runs.

The game remained tied until the seventh inning when the Indians finally broke through for more runs against Irish starter Aidan Wagers. Cody Johnson hit a two out double to bring in two runs and put the Indians up 5-3. Jonathan Stone followed with a two run homer over the left field fence, which stands at least 30 feet high at Sheldon High School.

Stoffal gave up one run to the Irish in the bottom of the seventh, but got the final out with the tying run at the plate. Stoffal pitched all seven innings for his third win of the year. The Roseburg sophomore surrendered eight hits and just one earned run. He struck out three and walked three.

Roseburg’s lineup produced from top to bottom. Garrett Russell, Doran Gillespie, Brody Black, Cody Johnson, and Jonathan Stone all had two hits for the Indians. Black, Johnson, and Stone all had two RBI as well.

Dawson Prickel led Sheldon going 3-for-3 with three singles and a run scored.

The win over Sheldon moves Roseburg (8-3; 4-2 SWC) into a tie for second place in the Southwest Conference standings. The Indians are back to action with a home doubleheader against Willamette on Saturday.
