KEIZER, OR – The Roseburg baseball team jumped on McNary with four unearned runs in the first inning and rode a strong pitching performance by Zack Mandera to an 11-0 win over the Celtics in five innings on Monday.
The Indians didn’t record a hit in the first, but three errors by third baseman Zack McCallister and two walks by starting pitcher Carl Rumbaugh helped the Indians send four runners across the plate.
Roseburg (1-0) added two more runs in the second inning on a double by Doran Gillespie. The Tribe stretched it to a double-digit lead in the fifth inning with five more runs. Cody Johnson, Jonathan Stone, Garrett Russell, Caden Johnson, and Brody Black all had hits in the deciding fifth inning.
Mandera pitched all five innings of the Mercy Rule win. The junior allowed a hit to the Celtics in the first inning, but held them without a hit the rest of the way. He finished with three strike outs, two walks, and two hit batters. McNary only got one runner into scoring position Mandera and the Indians’ defense.
Roseburg will next play against Westview in the home opener at Legion Field. The Indians and Wildcats are scheduled to meet on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. The teams will keep their fingers crossed that the game will be played. The forecast currently calls for a 60 percent chance for rain.
