ROSEBURG – There were highs and lows for the Umpqua RiverHawks basketball teams on Saturday. UCC swept the visiting Clark Penguins to finish out the regular season. The women won 96-57 to claim their second-consecutive South Region championship. The men followed with a 67-59 victory that put them in a three-way tie for third place in the South.
Despite a third place finish, the Umpqua men won’t be heading to the NWAC playoffs like the women. The head-to-head tiebreaker between the RiverHawks and Chemeketa and Clackamas left UCC as the odd team out. Umpqua went 1-3 against the Storm and Cougars for the worst head-to-head record of the group. Clackamas took the three-seed and Chemeketa wound up fourth.
The Umpqua women will now head to Everett, Washington for the conference playoffs. The RiverHawks gathered with friends and family at O’Tooles Pub in Roseburg to watch the NWAC Selection Show on Sunday. The women were matched-up against Peninsula in the first round. UCC will take the court at 10 a.m. on Thursday in the Walt Price Student Fitness Center at Everett Community College.
