NEWPORT — A cold second quarter was too much to overcome for the Sutherlin Bulldogs as they dropped a 73-52 decision to the Newport Cubs and were eliminated from the state 4A basketball playoffs on Saturday evening.

Justin Plechaty came off the bench and poured in 11 points for the Cubs in the second quarter and finished the game with 15. Sutherlin only managed a two-point field goal by Issac Horn in the second and the Bulldogs never could recover.

“The game got into hyperspeed and that’s not our game,” said Bulldogs coach Willis New. “We allowed their very good half-court trap to bother us with their length and quickness. We just didn’t move the ball as well as we should have.”

“We were taking fast shots and that’s where the game was right there, just a bad second quarter,” said sophomore guard Brandon Carr, who finished with 11 points.

Sutherlin added three offensive fouls to their woes in the second quarter and were outscored 18-2 by the Cubs, who led 37-18 at the half.

“At some point you say ‘wait a minute let’s have some consistency’ and that I think we struggled with, because there just wasn’t that consistency,” said New.

Sutherlin was able to cut a 22-point Newport lead to 13 in the third period, but the Cubs stretched it out to an 18-point lead at the end of three.

Daniels led Sutherlin with 12 points, on four 3-pointers. Albert Christianson added 11, including 3-for-4 at the free throw line. It was the final game in a Bulldogs uniform for both seniors.

Sutherlin will lose a third senior, Riley Westbrooks.

Oregon West Conference Player of the Year Kye Blaser hit for 25 points, including two 3-pointers, to lead Newport.

The Cubs (17-8) advance to the state tournament next week at Forest Grove.
