High school spring sports got underway on Monday with the first official practices of the season. Baseball, softball, tennis, golf, track and field, and lacrosse all got things going on the fields, courts, and courses.

As teams and athletes start the new season, there are a handful around the Umpqua Basin that are thinking of repeating as state champs.

The North Douglas softball team marched its way to a state title in 2017. The Lady Warriors upset the top-seed to reach the state championship game and then beat the defending state champs. It was the first state title in softball for North Douglas.

A couple of individual state champs will try to repeat in track and field. Roseburg’s Tyler Sconce claimed the 6A shot put state title at Heyward Field in Eugene last year. Glide’s Dillon Towne claimed two state titles last year at the track and field state meet. Towne won both the discus and shot put in the 3A classification.

The first contests of the spring season will be held on March 12.
