ROSEBURG – The No. 1 ranked Umpqua women improved to 25-0 on the year with a lopsided 108-48 victory over the Portland Panthers on Saturday. The RiverHawks jumped ahead 31-9 at the end of the first quarter and it was never close from there.
Six Umpqua players finished in double figures, led by Bria Thames with 19.
The UCC ladies gained a slightly larger lead on first place in the South Region, thanks to a loss by Clackamas. The RiverHawks lead the standings by two games with four left to play.
The Umpqua men were hoping to inch closer to first place with a win over No. 2 Portland, but the RiverHawks couldn’t finish off a second half comeback in a 95-79 loss.
UCC trailed by 18 at halftime, but rallied back to within four points with two minutes left to play in regulation. Portland responded with a 13-1 run to finish the game and UCC’s hopes of the upset.
Ethan Betts led the way for Umpqua with 21 points.
