PORTLAND – The Roseburg wrestling team remains in first at the 6A state wrestling tournament and the Indians had four wrestlers win in the semifinals for a shot at individual championships Saturday night.

Hunter Sparks (120), Thomas Spence (126), Austin David (152), and Brandon Jeffers (182) all won their semifinal matches to move on to the finals. Sparks is the only Roseburg wrestler in the group seeking to repeat as an individual state champ.

The Indians also saw three wrestlers win in the consolation quarterfinals and guarantee a spot on the podium. Kahleb Diaz (120), Caleb Jeffers (132), and Archer Bergeron all advanced to the consolation semifinals. A win would put them into the third place match on Saturday night.

Also wrestling for a spot in the third place match are Logan Folsom (160), Garrett Russell (170), and Terrell Jacks (195). The trio all suffered losses in their championship semifinal matches.

Roseburg is guaranteed to have 10 wrestlers on the podium in 2018. The Indians have scored 219.0 points and lead second place Newberg by 20.5.

The Glide Wildcats had a tough morning, losing six of their 10 matches. The Wildcats fell from first place in the 3A team standings to third. Only three of Glide’s six semifinal matches finished with wins.

Zach Holland (160), Cayden Kangiser (182), Collyn Potter (195) all advanced to the finals. All three placed at state last year. Holland and Potter will wrestler for an individual title for a second straight year, but both took second place in 2017.

Rhett Syverson (170) won his consolation quarterfinal match to move on to the consolation semis. Teammates Giovanni Allison (152), Zach Vigil (220), and Zack Welker (285) will all join Syverson in the consolation semifinals after losing in the championship semifinals this morning.
