PORTLAND – The Roseburg and Glide wrestling teams sit in first place after the first day of competition at the OSAA/US Bank/Les Schwab Tires state wrestling tournament.

The Indians advanced seven wrestlers through the championship brackets to the semifinals on Saturday and still have six wrestlers alive in the consolation brackets. Roseburg scored 156.0 points on the first day of the tournament and leads Newberg by 35.5 points.

Advancing to the semifinals for Roseburg were Hunter Sparks (120), Thomas Spence (126), Austin David (152), Logan Folsom (160), Garrett Russell (170), Brandon Jeffers (182), and Terrell Jacks (195). Advancing to the consolation quarterfinals for Roseburg were Kahleb Diaz (120), Caleb Jeffers (132), Tristin David (132), Archer Bergeron (138), Colin Rietmann (145), and Ethan Stoner (160).

The Indians will have the upper hand on Newberg heading into the final day of competition. Roseburg has 13 wrestlers remaining compared to just 10 (six in the semifinals) for the Tigers.

Wrestling at the state meet continues at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. If Roseburg can stay in front of the pack, the wrestling program will claim its fifth straight state championship and 10th in 12 seasons.

The Glide Wildcats hold a slim lead over Willamina/Falls City in the 3A competition. Glide tallied 71.0 points on the first day at Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum, while Willamina/Falls City recorded 70.5 points.

Glide advanced six wrestlers to the semifinals in the 3A brackets. Those student-athletes were Giovanni Allison (152), Zach Holland (160), Cayden Kangiser (182), Collyn Potter (195), Zach Vigil (220), and Zack Welker (285). The Wildcats also have four wrestlers still alive in the consolation brackets.

The Wildcats last won a state title in 2014. It was the second of back-to-back championships for Glide. Nyssa has won the last three state titles and currently sits in third place.

Wrestling continues Saturday in Portland. Championship bouts are expected to start at 6:30 p.m.
