SUTHERLIN — If all the injuries that the Sutherlin girls basketball team has endured all year weren’t enough, they had even more to deal with Tuesday night and dropped a lopsided 48-21 decision to Junction City.
The Bulldogs have lost three starters to season-ending injuries and lost one other player before the season even started.
Sutherlin’s (10-13, 5-4 Sky-Em) leading scorer, sophomore Kiersten Haines, was hobbled by an injured ankle. She never touched the ball in the first half and didn’t play in the second half. Sophomore Abby Masterfield was also suffering from the sickness that’s going around, but still tried to play through.
Michala Carpine had her biggest offensive night with 11 points for Sutherlin. Masterfield added six with two 3-pointers and Savannah McHugill had the other four points.
The first place Tigers (18-4, 8-1 Sky-Em) led right from the start and built a 28-14 lead at the half. Sutherlin never got any closer. Junction City had four players in double figures with Alexa Norris and Hailey Bruhn both scoring 12. Madison Mehlbrech had 11 and McKenzie Evans added 10.
The Tigers are tied with Cottage Grove for first place. They will visit winless Sweet Home Friday, while the Lions are at Elmira.
Sutherlin will finish the regular season with a trip to Sisters on Friday night.
