EUGENE – The Roseburg boys basketball team built a sizable first half lead against the Willamette Wolverines on Friday, but the momentum didn’t last. The Indians stumbled in the fourth quarter and let Willamette back into the contest. The Wolverines went on to outlast Roseburg in overtime for a 48-43 victory.

The Indians jumped out to an 11-point lead in the first half behind a strong start from Cody Johnson. The senior drained 3-of-6 from behind the arch and scored 11 of his team-high 16 points before the break.

Roseburg (11-10; 2-7 SWC) still led by seven heading to the fourth quarter, but Willamette senior Seth Skeele broke out of slump to score eight points and lead the Wolverines to a comeback. Skeele drained one of three 3-pointers with 1:14 left to play to give the Wolverines a 40-38 advantage, their largest lead of the night.

The Indians used a lot of time off the clock on their ensuing possession and Merhawi Lake drew a foul with 42 seconds remaining. He made two free throws to tie the game at 40. Skeele had a chance to win it on a buzzer-beater from long range, but came up short and the game went to overtime.

In overtime, Willamette (11-11; 5-5 SWC) went ahead 44-40 with four made free throws. Roseburg’s Collin Warmouth cut the deficit down to one with a tightly contested three-pointer, but the Wolverines iced the game with four more free throws.

Warmouth scored a season-low 10 points to added to Johnson’s 16. No other Roseburg player reached double figures.

Skeele scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Wolverines.

Up next, the Roseburg boys will play their final two home games of the season next week. First up will be North Medford on Tuesday.
