EUGENE – It was a slow start for the Roseburg boys basketball team on Friday against Sheldon and by the time they found an offensive rhythm it was too late for a comeback. The Irish finished the first half with a flurry of scoring and pulled away in the second half for a 58-47 victory.

Sheldon’s Devante Bailey and Zak Hankins combined to make four three-pointers in the first quarter to give the Irish a 15-9 lead early. The scored remained the same for nearly all of the second quarter as both teams struggled to get a shot to drop. Sheldon finally broke through in the final minute and scored six points to lead 21-11 at the break.

Roseburg’s (11-8; 2-5 SWC) issues on offense continued into the third quarter and the Irish stayed hot behind the arch. Bailey and Hankins combined for another four three-pointers and Uta Mageo added another as the Irish pulled ahead by as many as 24 points before the fourth quarter.

The Indians caught fire in the fourth quarter and outscored the Irish 22-9, but the deficit was too large for a last minute comeback.

Collin Warmouth scored a game-high 25 points and finished as Roseburg’s only player in double figures. Merhawi Lake added nine points off the bench on 3-for-3 shooting from long distance.

Sheldon (10-10; 4-4 SWC) had four players in double figures and the five starters accounted for all of the team’s points. Hankins and Dominic McGarvey led the way with 14 points each.

Up next, the Indians will visit the South Medford Panthers on Tuesday.
