CLACKAMAS – The top-ranked Umpqua women survived another close call against the Clackamas Cougars on Saturday. The Lady RiverHawks edged the No. 5 Cougars 97-92 behind a double-double from Bria Thames.

Thames played all 40 minutes of the contest and scored a team-high 27 points, while pulling down 11 boards.

UCC fell behind by one after the first quarter, but pulled ahead 38-37 at the break. The RiverHawks outscored the Cougars 31-25 in the third quarter to build a seven-point advantage and hung on down the stretch.

The game featured a number of former prep stars from the Umpqua Basin. Former Roseburg Indian Jordan Stotler scored 13 for the RiverHawks and played all 40 minutes. Former Sutherlin Bulldog Taylor Stricklin added 11 for UCC.

Fellow Sutherlin alumni Ricki and Kayce Mock combined to score 16 points for Clackamas.

The Umpqua men hung close with No. 6 Clackamas, but the Cougars outlasted the RiverHawks down the stretch for a 79-74 victory.

Connor Shaw scored a game-high 22 points to lead four UCC players in double figures. He shot 4-of-8 from three-point distance.
