JUNCTION CITY – The Sutherlin boys led nearly all the way Tuesday night until Junction City tied the game late in the fourth quarter and sent the contest to overtime. In the extra session Trevor Daniels and Mason Gill each had five points to lead the Bulldogs to a 59-56 victory over the Tigers.
Gill scored a three-point play with 23 seconds left to put Sutherlin (11-7, 3-1 Sky-Em) up 56-54 after the Tigers had taken the lead 54-53. Then, after a flurry of action, Gill hit a lay-in and was fouled with one second remaining. He made the free throw that clinched it, but Matthew Penn was fouled on a shot from mid-court and hit two of three free throws.
Fortunately for the Bulldogs, the half court heave didn’t go in or Penn, who was 14-for-19 from the line, could have sent the game to a second overtime.
Gill had 17 for Sutherlin and three other players finished in double figures. Daniels had 14, Brandon Carr added 13, and Riley Westbrooks finished with 10.
Junction City (10-8, 1-3 Sky-Em) was led by Matthew Penn with 29.
It was the fifth straight road game for Sutherlin and fourth straight league game on the road. The Bulldogs will finally play at home Friday, hosting league-leading Sisters.
