ROSEBURG – The list of college sports offered at Umpqua Community College could be growing in the near future. Athletic director Craig Jackson is set to propose Phase II of a strategic enrollment plan to the school’s Board of Education at a meeting on Wednesday. The athletic department is proposing to add men’s and women’s track and field and baseball as new sports offered by the college.

UCC added six new sports teams that debuted this school year. In the fall, men’s and women’s obstacle course racing and cross country began their inaugural seasons. This winter, the men’s and women’s wrestling programs started their first year. The addition of the new teams increased student-athlete enrollment from 30 to 95.

Jackson hopes that with the addition of three more teams, student-athlete enrollment will increase to over 200 once teams assemble full rosters.

The proposal timeline would have both new sports recruiting athletes for the spring of the 2018-19 school year. Track and field would plan to compete right away with use of the facilities at UCC and at Sutherlin High School. Baseball would start building a roster, but wouldn’t start competition until the spring of 2020.

The baseball team would use Legion Field for home games according to Jackson’s proposal. Conversations between the Umpqua athletic department and the Roseburg American Legion have already gotten underway.
