ROSEBURG – The Roseburg boys basketball team played a tight first half with the Sheldon Irish, but faded after the break to drop its Southwest Conference season opener 49-37 on Tuesday night.

Roseburg (9-4; 0-1 SWC) built as much as a six-point lead in the first half and led for nearly every moment of the first and second quarters, but a three-point basket by Sheldon’s Devante Bailey before the halftime buzzer sent both teams to the locker room tied 23-23.

The Indians started the second half with a 4-0 run, but the Irish stepped up the defensive pressure and started forcing turnovers. That led Sheldon (7-6; 1-1 SWC) to go on a 14-0 run and build a 36-27 advantage. The Irish lead the rest of the contest.

Sheldon’s Patrick Herbert was held to only two points in the first half, but poured in 12 of his team-high 14 points after the break. Devante Bailey put in 12 for the Irish, who finished with eight players in the scoring column.

Collin Warmouth was the only Roseburg player to reach double figures and finished with a game-high 20 points. Cody Johnson scored seven for the Indians.

Roseburg will continue its conference schedule with a home game against the Willamette Wolverines on Friday night. The contest tips off at 6:45 p.m. Broadcast coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on 1490 The Score or watch online at 541radio.com.
