COOS BAY – The Sutherlin boys basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 47-45 loss to the North Bend Bulldogs in the final seconds of regulation Tuesday night.
The game was tied at 45 in the final seconds of the fourth quarter. Sutherlin’s Mason Gill missed a pair of free-throws with seven seconds remaining and North Bend was awarded the ball after a short battle for the rebound. Initially it looked as if North Bend would have just 0.1 seconds to try a desperation heave, but the officials adjusted the clock to 1.5 seconds.
The brown Bulldogs threw a full-court pass and the ball was tipped to Kameron Harmon who scored on a lay-up as time ran out.
Sutherlin (8-6) had battled back to tie the game 19-19 at the half and actually took a four-point lead in the fourth quarter, but turnovers gave North Bend extra chances and it took advantage.
Gill had 14 to lead Sutherlin in scoring. Albert Christianson added 12.
North Bend (6-7) was led in scoring by Jayden Frank’s 15 points. Randy Vader added 14 and Jake Simmons contributed 11.
The Sutherlin boys will visit Sweet Home to open Sky-Em League play on Friday.
