MERLIN — After leading by five points at the end of the first quarter, the Sutherlin offense disappeared for the final three quarters and Marshfield ran away with a 56-25 victory in the opening round of the Evergreen Christmas Classic at North Valley High School.
Sutherlin (6-4) was outscored 19-3 in the second period and did not score in the fourth.
The defense was unable to stop the Pirates’ Grant Woolsey who had 19 with five three-pointers and Grant Webster who also had 19 for Marshfield, which led 44-23 after three quarters and then shut out the Bulldogs in the final period.
“To get beat like that becomes a heart issue, not an ability issue. I didn’t have them prepared and this one’s a hundred percent on me, but we will be prepared in the future,” said coach Willis New.
Sutherlin moves into the loser bracket at 2 p.m. Friday at North Valley High School against (South Umpqua-North Valley loser).
Marshfield (6-3) will play in the winner’s bracket at 3:45 p.m. Friday against (North Valley-South Umpqua winner),
