EUGENE – There could be a new conference opponent on the schedule for the Roseburg High School sports teams – at least in name.
A petition to change the mascot for South Eugene High School has received over 200 signatures as of Thursday morning. The petitioner, Constance Van Flandern, says that the Axemen mascot used by South Eugene is discriminatory towards female athletes at the high school. Van Flandern wants the 4J school district to allow the students, faculty, and administrators to pick a new non-gender based mascot for the school’s sports teams.
Roseburg’s teams face South Eugene in many sports as a part of the Southwest Conference. Read the full petition HERE.
