A slew of holiday basketball tournaments get underway Wednesday and many local teams from the Umpqua Basin will be out on the courts.
The Roseburg boys basketball team will square off with Forest Grove in the first round of the Abby’s Holiday Classic in Medford Wednesday night. The Indians are coming off a disappointing loss to Aloha last Thursday and had a couple of practices before a few days off for the holidays. Now, Roseburg will gear up for a stretch run before beginning Southwest Conference play in a couple of weeks.
Roseburg will face Forest Grove at North Medford High School. The Vikings, out of the Greater Valley Conference, are 3-5 on the year and coming off a loss to Century last Thursday. Wednesday’s game will begin at 6 p.m. Roseburg will move on to face either La Salle Prep or North Medford in the next round on Thursday.

The Douglas boys are headed to Turner, Ore. to take part in the Cascade Holiday Classic, hosted by Cascade High School. The Trojans begin the Classic against the host Cascade Cougars at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Cascade Classic runs through Thursday.
The Sutherlin girls have traveled over 2,000 miles to participate in the Capital City Classic in Juneau, Alaska. The Lady Bulldogs begin the trip with a contest against Chugiak High School from Anchorage, Alaska on Wednesday. Sutherlin will also face two other teams from Alaska at the tournament, which runs through Saturday.
Also on the schedule for Wednesday is a nonleague contest between Camas Valley and Crow. The Hornets will hit the road and the girls take the court first at 3 p.m. The boy’s follow at 4:30 p.m.
There are a number of other tournaments also being held this week. Starting Thursday, the Roseburg girls begin play in the Les Schwab Holiday Oregon Hoopfest in Bend. The Evergreen Federal Bank Tournament hosted by North Valley High School in Grants Pass begins Thursday and will feature a few local teams. Sutherlin and South Umpqua will help fill the boy’s bracket and the South Umpqua girls will compete in the girl’s bracket. And the Oakland Oakers will host a number of local boys and girls teams for the Oakland Booster Club Holiday Tournament.
