COOS BAY — Harlee Baker’s game-high 23 points helped Sutherlin to a 13-point lead after three quarters and the Bulldogs hung on without her in most of the fourth period to gain a 50-41 win over Coquille in the opening round of the Les Schwab South Coast Holiday Tournament in Coos Bay Thursday night.

Baker had nine points in the third quarter and the Bulldogs looked like they might run away with a win. But Baker went down with a knee injury three minutes into the fourth quarter and never returned.

Coquille (5-2) kept making runs to keep the game close, but freshman Page Bailey hit a big three-pointer and a pair of free throws and sophomore Kiersten Haines clinched the win with three free-throws down the stretch.

“I was really pleased with our defensive intensity. Our young kids did a great job and we took care of the ball much better,” said Bulldogs coach Josh Grotting. “A lot of growth tonight.”

Haines finished with 11 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Bailey had eight and also had two three-pointers.

The Bulldogs lost to Coquille last year in the championship game of this tournament and it was the game that Baker broke a finger, which forced her to miss half of the season. The ladies also lost to Coquille in a non-league game later in the 2016-17 season.

The Bulldogs (4-2) advanced in the semifinals of the winner’s bracket against Madras at 5:15 p.m. Friday. Tune in for the game on i101-FM, starting with pregame at 5 p.m.
