SUTHERLIN — Sutherlin trailed 9-0 late in the first quarter when senior guard Trevor Daniels dropped in a pair of three-point shots to get them back in the game and they pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the North Valley Knights 46-34 on Tuesday night.

Daniels had five three-pointers, but missed all six of his free throw tries, however, he still led the Bulldogs with 15 points.

Payton Hope hit a three-pointer late in the third period to give Sutherlin (4-1) the lead for good at 27-25. Mason Gill finished it with a slam dunk off a turnover for two of his eight points in the game.

Coach Willis News was most pleased at how his team rebounded and played solid defense after getting behind early.

“It’s that psychological thing with the threes, it’s amazing, you hit a three at one end and you play better defense at the other end,” New said.

Issac Horn finished with nine rebounds and Albert Christianson had eight.

“We don’t really like to spot nine points to start out, but I thought we responded pretty well,” New added.

North Valley (2-3) was led by Christian Wytcherly with 16 points.

Sutherlin will go to the South Coast Les Schwab Invitational Basketball Tournament in Coos Bay starting on Thursday opening against Coquille at 5 p.m.
