MEDFORD – The Sutherlin girls had to battle foul problems and turnovers, but held on to defeated St. Mary’s of Medford 52-41  in a non-league game Thursday night in Medford.

Senior Harlee Baker scored nine points in the first four minutes before she got into foul trouble and had to sit the rest of the half. She finished with 16 points, including a pair of threes, to lead the Bulldogs.

Sutherlin led from the start taking a 16-8 lead after a quarter. But the lead was only five points after three thanks to a 10-point quarter for St. Mary’s junior Emma Bennion. She finished with a game-high 24 points.

Baker hit 4-of-5 free throws after she had missed her first nine this season and as a team the Bulldog made 11-for-17, much better than last Saturday night when they missed all 14 attempts from the line.

Sutherlin, which improved to 2-2 with the win,  is home Tuesday night to host North Valley in another non-league contest.
