MEDFORD – Sophomore Mason Gill’s 23 points led Sutherlin to a 47-29 non-league victory over St. Mary’s Thursday night in Medford.

Sutherlin led from start to finish taking a 15-9 lead after a quarter and built it to 26-14 at the half. But they never really put it out of reach until midway through the fourth quarter when they built a 20-point lead.

The defense held St. Mary’s (2-3, 0-0) to just five points in the second quarter and four in the third.

Gill got the best of the match-up of the sophomores in the middle holding St. Mary’s very athletic 6-foot-5 sophomore Trev Foster to just eight points.

Gill, who was the only player for either team in double figures, hit 7-of-9 from the free throw line and scored eight points in the crucial fourth quarter to put the game away. Brandon Carr added eight points including a pair of threes.

Coach Willis New was most pleased with the rebounding of their three inside players Gill, Albert Christianson and Riley Westbrooks.

“I though defensively we made some stands and offensively, we were okay,” New said. “Albert just did a great job on the boards, and Riley, those three were really boarding well.”

Sutherlin (3-1,0-0) will host North Valley Tuesday night in a non-league game.
