CORVALLIS – Mike Riley, the winningest head coach in Oregon State football history, is returning to Corvallis as an assistant under new head coach Jonathan Smith and former Roseburg standout Jake Cookus is remaining with the Beavers after two years in an advisory role.

The Oregon State athletic department announced Thursday five new assistant coaches that have been hired under first-year head coach Smith.

Jake Cookus

Riley returns for his third stint coaching at Oregon State and will serve as assistant head coach with a-to-be determined position assignment. The Corvallis-native left the Beavers after the 2014 season to become the head coach at Nebraska. He spent three seasons with the Cornhuskers and went 19-19 before getting fired in November.

Cookus spent the past two seasons as OSU’s special teams quality control coach and will be promoted to special teams coordinator under Smith. The former OSU safety was a teammate of Smith’s from 1998-2001 and has nearly 20 years of special teams experience as a player and coach. Cookus was a standout athlete at Roseburg High School as well.

The other coaches announced by OSU include Jim Michalczik, Brian Lindgren, and Mike McDonald. Michalczik spent the past five seasons with the Arizona Wildcats and will serve as the run game coordinator and offensive line coach, with the added title of associate head coach. Lindgren comes from the Colorado Buffaloes and will serve as the Beavers’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. McDonald will be OSU’s new strength and conditioning coach.
