SUTHERLIN – The Sutherlin boys and girls took their lumps against two quality opponents Friday night in the Bill Spelgatti Memorial Tournament at Sutherlin High School.
The Lady Bulldogs couldn’t find a way to stop Dayton’s 6-foot-1 post Chloe Cisneros who poured in 28 points, including 14 in the first quarter. Cisneros dominated the paint over the much shorter Bulldogs and the Pirates rolled to a 53-28 win.
Sutherlin didn’t have a player in double figures. Kiersten Haines, Harlee Baker, and Kiersten Porter all finished with six points.
Dayton, which was runner-up in the 3A state tournament last year, led by 11 at halftime and then put the game away outscoring the Bulldogs 16-4 in the final period.
Sutherlin has another tough one Saturday night when it takes on Salem Academy in the final round of the tournament, scheduled for 7 :30 p.m.
The Sutherlin boys fell behind by 16 after three quarters against De La Salle North Catholic of Milwaukie, but put on a run in the fourth quarter to cut the lead down to six with 15 seconds left.
The Bulldogs had the ball in the closing moments, but the Knights held on for a 59-53 victory.
Sutherlin sophomore Mason Gill tossed in 20 points with a pair of threes. Riley Westbrooks was also in double figures with 10, all in the fourth period. He had three 3-pointers.Trevor Daniels made three 3-pointers for nine points.
Kadeem Nelson led the Knights with 21 points, including five 3-pointers.
The Bulldogs will take on Salem Academy Saturday at approximately 8:45 p.m. in the final game of the tournament.
