SUTHERLIN – The Sutherlin boys and girls made it a clean sweep over South Umpqua on the first night of the Bill Spelgatti Invitational basketball tournament at Sutherlin High School Wednesday.

Thanks to 21 points from sophomore Kiersten Haines, the Sutherlin girls pulled away to a 15-point lead after three quarters and coasted home for a 51-36 victory over the Lady Lancers.

South Umpqua was led by Shayln Gray with 14.

Nobody else scored in double figures for either team,

Coming up next in the tournament, the South Umpqua girls will play Lakeview Friday at noon. The Lady Bulldogs will battle Dayton Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Sutherlin boys used a solid defensive effort to shut down South Umpqua 58-21. The Lancers scored only four points in the first and fourth quarters and the Bulldogs built a 36-12 lead at the half and were never threatened.

Sutherlin had three players in double figures including senior guard Trevor Daniels, who led all scorers with 15. Sophomore Mason Gill added 13 and Issac Horn chipped in 10.

Matt Lee had eight points, including two 3-pointers, to lead the Lancers.

The Lancers will meet Lakeview at 1:15 Friday afternoon. The Sutherlin boys go against De La Salle Catholic of Milwaukie Friday night at 8:45 p.m.
