Today is the start of the high school basketball season and the schedule is jam packed with games to tipoff the year.

The Roseburg basketball teams will begin the season with nonconference matchups against the 5A Ashland Grizzlies. The boys start the season at home, while the girls hit the road.

Roseburg’s boys team is seeking to get back in the postseason for the first time since the 2013-14 season. The Indians have high hopes heading into the first game of the year due to a lineup filled with returning players. Four of Roseburg’s five starters from last year return this season and Roseburg’s top three scorers are included in that group.

The Indians will host a young and inexperienced roster from Ashland tonight at 6:45 p.m. Tune in for coverage of tonight’s game and throughout the season on 1490 The Score. Pregame coverage starts at 6:30 p.m. and the game can also be seen streaming live online at 541radio.com.

The Roseburg girls reached the postseason last year, despite a poor finish in the Southwest Conference standings. The Indians will try to put together a stronger performance this year and it starts with a trip south to face the Grizzlies. Tonight’s season opener begins at 7 p.m.

The Sutherlin Bulldogs are hosting the 3rd annual Bill Spelgatti Memorial Tournament to begin the season and a couple of local teams will be taking part. Glide and South Umpqua will send teams to Sutherlin to take part.

The Glide boys will kickoff the festivities tonight at 5 p.m. with a game against St. Mary’s of Medford. Then the Sutherlin teams will host the South Umpqua Lancers to finish off day one of the tournament. The Lady Bulldogs will take on the Lady Lancers at 7:30 p.m. and the Sutherlin and South Umpqua boys will follow at 8:45 p.m.

Unlike in years past, the Spelgatti Memorial Tournament will not be a bracket format. All games have been predetermined and will be played over the next four days. Find the schedule HERE.
