Monday marks the start of the high school winter sports season. Basketball, wrestling, and swimming teams can all hold their first official practices. Teams will get two-and-a-half weeks of practices before they can start competing in games, matches, and meets. The regular season begins on Wednesday, November 29.
As the winter season begins, a number of teams are looking to return to the post season. The Sutherlin girls basketball team has won four-straight state titles and will begin its quest for a fifth straight at the Bill Spelgatti Memorial Tournament, hosted by the Bulldogs. Sutherlin starts the season and the tournament with a game against South Umpqua on November 29.
Other basketball teams hoping for a return to the state playoffs include; the Sutherlin boys, the Douglas girls, the Oakland girls and boys, the North Douglas boys and girls, the Elkton girls, and the Days Creek boys.
The Roseburg wrestling program claimed its fourth straight state championship last year and the team will go for it’s fifth straight this winter. The Indians graduated four individual state champs, but will return 13 wrestlers that qualified for the state meet, including four that placed in the top six. The Indians begin their season with a tournament at McNary on December 1.
