GOLD BEACH — The 11th seeded Oakland Oakers have advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2A football playoffs after a convincing rout of 6th seeded Gold Beach 45-14 Friday night in Gold Beach.

Oakland led only 14-0 at halftime, but blew several chances to add to that score with three fumbles that stopped drives inside the Gold Beach 20 and two of those inside the 10.

But senior Andrew Harrington had another monster rushing game with 231 yards on 31 carries and ran for five touchdowns. He completed 4-of-5 passes for another 67 yards and the Oakers scored 31 in the second half to pull away for what turned out to be an easy victory.

The Oakland defense stymied the Panthers offense allowing only one offensive touchdown.

“The defense did an outstanding job,” said Oakland coach Ben Lane. “We were definitely disciplined tonight.”

The Oakers struggled with turnovers and some ill-timed penalties in the first half, but the defense kept them in the game until the offense started wearing down the Panthers.

“The key was our kids came out and out-physicaled them,” said Lane. “We controlled the line and they didn’t have an answer for the run. Andrew (Harrington) did what we expected him to do and he did a great job.”

Junior running back Bryan Lehman ran for 107 yards on 12 carries and sophomore Chandler Miller caught a 5-yard scoring pass from Dylan Baimbridge in the fourth quarter. Senior Reese Carson finished the scoring by returning an interception 54-yards for a score.

Oakland (6-4) will meet the winner of Saturday’s game between Bandon and Knappa at Astoria.
