The start of the high school football state playoffs are one day away and there are six Umpqua Basin teams that will kickoff in the first round this weekend.
Two local teams will have their first round match-ups featured on the radio Friday.
First, the Camas Valley Hornets will look to reach the second round for the first time in three years when they host Cove Friday afternoon. Camas Valley is in the post season for an eighth-straight year, but the Hornets haven’t been out of the first round since they lost in the semifinals in 2014.
C.V. is coming off a triumph over top-ranked Triad in the District 2 title game last week. Head coach Eli Wolfe is hoping that momentum will help the Hornets overcome some key injuries.
Starting quarterback Ryland Brown will likely not play in the first round unless absolutely necessary. The senior was the District 2 Offensive Player of the Year and will be sorely missed. Brown suffered a dislocated right shoulder, his non-throwing side.
All-League running back Ryan Weickum is also questionable for the contest and may not see the field unless it’s necessary. Another senior, Jack House, will also be playing through pain as he deals with a shoulder injury suffered in week one.
Camas Valley and Cove will be broadcast on 1490 The Score. The game kicks off at 1 p.m. and pregame coverage starts at 12:45 p.m. The game can also be heard streaming online at 541radio.com. Coverage of Camas Valley football is presented by Lookingglass Brewery.
Then, Friday night the Oakland Oakers will visit the Gold Beach Panthers for a first round match in the 2A state playoffs.
Gold Beach claimed the Sunset Conference championship this season, while Oakland reached the playoffs thanks to a win in the regular season finale. The Oakers are back in the playoffs after missing out the past two years.
Senior Andrew Harrington said that the team is playing with more confidence as of late and the Oakers will hope for a strong performance on the coast. Oakland and Gold Beach kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday night. Tune in for coverage starting at 6:45 p.m. on i101 FM or streaming online at 541radio.com.
Other local playoff match-ups on Friday include three games held in Klamath Falls. The South Umpqua Lancers heading to Mazama High School. The Lancers pulled off some big wins this year and finished second in the Far West League. They’ll look to take down another top team. No. 13 South Umpqua will be the underdog against No. 4 Mazama. The game begins at 7 p.m. Friday. Listen to the game on CBS Sports Radio The Winner out of Klamath Falls.
The Yoncalla Eagles will also head to Klamath Falls on Friday to face No. 1 seed Triad. The Eagles have had one of the best offenses in the state, but as the lowest seed in the 1A bracket they’ll have their work cut out. Yoncalla and Triad kickoff at 5 p.m.
North Douglas will also be in the Klamath Basin, where the Warriors will play a first round match-up at Hosanna Christian. The contest starts at 7 p.m. and can be heard on ESPN 93.3 FM out of Klamath Falls.
Finally, on Saturday the Elkton Elks will host Wallowa in the 1A state playoffs. The Elks narrowly earned a home playoff game in the opening round for the first time since at least the 1980s. The playoff contest gets underway at 1 p.m.
