NORTH BEND – The South Umpqua girls cross country team qualified for the state meet after finishing second in the Far West League district meet at Tugman State Park in North Bend on Thursday.
The Lady Lancers had four runners finish in the top 15 overall standings and edged out North Bend by one point for second place. Only the top two teams qualified for the state meet. South Umpqua will now take seven runners to compete at the state meet on November 4 at Lane Community College.
Senior Savannah Slay led the Lancers with a fourth place finish. She ran a PR time of 20:16.4 and beat out the fifth place finisher by three tenths of a second. Bethany Kalebaugh finished 10th for South Umpqua and Aneykah McCall and Haven Pickup also finished in the top 15.
South Umpqua senior Nakai Sinohui finished second in the boy’s race to qualify for state as an individual. The Lancers finished fourth as a team.
Sutherlin, Oakland, Glide, and Yoncalla also had runners compete at district meets on Thursday, but fell short of reaching the state meet.
